Initial Assessment of Upper Whatshan River Bull Trout Spawning
Author: H. Andrusak
Conduct an initial Bull Trout redd survey on Fife Creek, the primary tributary of the upper Whatshan River. Results of 2016 fall redd surveys conducted on the primary tributary of the Upper Whatshan River that is the only known Bull Trout spawning system in the Whatshan Reservoir basin.
Bull trout redd surveys of Fife Creek, located in the upper Whatshan River watershed, were conducted from September 20 to 30, 2016 by a two person crew. The initial reconnaisance survey had been completed prior to the redd surveys hence the locations of barriers to fish passage on the main Fife Creek and the North Fife tributary were known. A few spawning Bull Trout were observed during the reconnaisnce survey hence the redd survey was timed to occur after spawning was completed.
On September 30th a total of 36 bull trout redds (including 5 in North Fife) were observed in the Fife Creek system. Several redds were observed during the September 20th partial survey conducted as part of the reconaisance work. Water temperatures in Fife Creek were 5oC and 6oC on September 20th and 30th respectively.
The barrier to fish passage at 4.55 km on Fife Creek is considered a debris barrier.
