Kokanee Spawning Assessments on Norns Creek Fan 2008
Author: J.T.A. Baxter
Redd and spawner surveys were used to estimate kokanee spawner abundance. Surveys were conducted to provide information about shallow water redds having the potential to dewater during a scheduled BRX reduction on October 1. A salvaging protocol was also in place to incubate dewatered ova which would otherwise be stranded during the BRX reduction. A total of two surveys were conducted, one on September 18 and one on September 29. Kokanee did not use the Norns Creek fan for spawning in 2008.
During the surveys we did not observe any spawning kokanee or redds in the Norns Creek fan area. Norns Creek fan was not used in 2008 for spawning by kokanee. The October 1 flow reduction from the BRX did not have an impact to kokanee spawning in the Norns Creek fan area. The BRX reduction from 18,000 cfs to 15,000 cfs (RE 200724) was ramped down every 15 minutes by 500 cfs and resulted in a 10 cm drop at Norns Creek fan. Levels at the Hugh Keenleyside Dam remained at approximately 29,000 cfs well into October.
