Lake Koocanusa Burbot Enumeration (UF-F16-113) Year 2

Lake Koocanusa Burbot Enumeration (UF-F16-113) Year 2

Author: J. Smithson, M.D. Robinson

Study helps address knowledge gaps by assessing burbot abundance, distribution, and movement in the Canadian portion of the Koocanusa/Libby Reservoir during the winter months.

A total of seven burbot were captured during the four rounds of sampling. None of the fish captured were found to have PIT tags previously installed. Burbot were captured at four of the five sites. Average capture depth was 16.8 m. The burbot ranged in size from 530 to 678 mm and all were considered mature. Two of the burbot were suspected to be female while the sex could not be confidently determined in the remaining fish.
Catch-per-unit-effort as fish/trap-day (CPUEDay) averaged 0.029 fish/trap day. CPUE data from both years shows that burbot densities in Koocanusa reservoir are among the lowest in a dataset of burbot populations in the Kootenay/Columbia regions.
Water levels measured as elevation (feet above sea level) at the Libby Dam fore bay ranged from 2447 feet to 2439 feet over the sampling period.
