Lower Columbia River Program 19b – Lower Columbia River Dredging at Indian Eddy
Author: Knight Pia Ltd
This environmental review identifies the environmental effects of dredging substrate from Indian Eddy. The primary water use management questions addressed by this environmental review are: -What are the aquatic ecosystem conditions (water quality, physical parameters, fish communities, etc) found within the area of Indian Eddy? -How will these conditions change from baseline conditions during, and after, dredging? -How does dredging affect the aquatic ecosystem of Indian Eddy, and to a lesser degree the surrounding riverine habitat? The following were the objectives of this study: -To describe the aquatic ecosystem of Indian Eddy and the surrounding riverine areas through literature review and on-site observation -To understand the potential effects of dredging on the aquatic species and habitats of Indian Eddy and the surrounding riverine areas -To determine if dredging can be undertaken at Indian Eddy in an ecologically appropriate manner, and -To provide mitigation and compensation alternatives, if dredging is deemed to cause significant deleterious alterations or impacts to the aquatic ecosystem.
The results of this preliminary analysis suggest that there exists the risk of residual environmental impacts from dredging activities in Indian Eddy as a result of potential impacts, at a minimum, to fish and fish habitat.
