Objectives were to: 1. create patches of native black cottonwood riparian habitat, by planting live stakes of willow, dogwood, and black cottonwood that will eventually shade out the competing reed canarygrass and become functional riparian ecosystems, and 2. increase community engagement and knowledge by providing an opportunity to discuss visions for Downie Marsh, opportunities to be involved in restoration work, and education about local native and non-native species and the benefits of habitat enhancement.
1300 live stakes planted (red-osier dogwood, willow and black cottonwood). Planting occured at Airport Marsh, Big Eddy, Downie, Nichol. 40% survival in 2017, compared to 50% from 2014.
